How do I stop an IRS wage garnishment?

Updated October 8, 20262 sourcesTaxTruce teamFact checked
The short answer

Call the IRS number on the levy. The IRS must release a levy if you pay, set up a plan that doesn't allow it, or it causes economic hardship. A release does not erase the debt. Set up a way to pay or it can come back.

You can appeal before or after a levy. Publication 1660 explains how.

  • Call the number on the levy notice
  • Ask about a payment plan
  • Explain any hardship
  • Return your dependents form to your employer
