The short answer

## What should I do about an IRS audit letter?

An audit is a review of your return and records. The IRS tells you by mail, never by phone. Answer by the date on the letter, or the IRS will finish without you and send its changes.

**Most audits are of returns filed in the last 2 years. The IRS usually doesn't go back more than 6.**[Source: IRS: IRS audits](https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/irs-audits)

Being picked does not always mean a problem. Some returns are chosen by a formula, or because they are tied to a partner's audit.

Mail audits ask about items like income, expenses and deductions. If you have too many records to mail, you can ask for a face to face audit.

For a mail audit, the IRS can usually give a one time 30 day extension. Fax your request to the number on the letter.

## Key facts

* The response date
* Which items and years it asks about
* Your records for those items
* Whether the letter is real (audits never start by phone)
* Whether you want a pro to represent you

## Options that may help

**Answer it yourself**

Send the exact records asked for. Get proof the IRS got them.

**Get representation**

Enrolled agents, CPAs and attorneys can represent you in audits.

**If you disagree**

You have appeal rights. Publication 1 explains them.

Results depend on your situation. Not every case qualifies.
