# What if I owe the IRS $20,000?

Updated October 8, 20263 sourcesTaxTruce team[Fact checked](/editorial-standards)

The short answer

You can still set up a plan online if all returns are filed. Because you owe $25,000 or less, a direct debit plan may also let you ask to withdraw a public lien notice after 3 payments. The plan must pay in full within 60 months, or before the collection time ends, whichever is first.

Interest at 7% a year keeps adding up until the balance is paid.
